PHAL:ANGST release Minor Tremors in their twentieth year

Vienna band PHAL:ANGST released Minor Tremors on Noise Appeal Records on 18 September, twenty years after the group formed. It is their sixth studio album, and the combination of electronic industrial textures with guitar-led post-rock makes it a release with a clear place in the city's wider electronic scene.

The anniversary is more than a number attached to a record. In a recent interview with mica – music austria, founding members Philipp Spichtinger and Dion Hämmerle looked back at how the project developed over two decades. The band's own account places its beginnings in Vienna's DIY punk and hardcore milieu. Electronics remained part of the lineup rather than an occasional production effect: Hämmerle is credited with electronics, while the current group also includes Alfred Wihalm on guitar and Nina Schönwald on bass.

The record takes political dread as a subject, but its stated response is not only despair. The band's description links the songs to fears about fascism and to the possibility of finding strength through cooperation and empathy. That is the band's account of its themes, not a claim that the album resolves those questions. Its five long tracks leave room for sustained atmosphere instead of conventional short-song structures.

Independent coverage has begun to test how the music carries that ambition.
